St Albans School Sport Guidelines 2015

The following are guidelines for inter school sport at our school:
While we endeavour to cater for as many students as possible, numbers are limited to the availability of coaching from teachers and parents. We are also only allowed to enter a maximum of two teams for each sport. In each term children may trial for any number of sports, however, if a child is selected in more than one sport and the sports are played at the same time, they will obviously have to make a commitment to one only. Children who do not gain selection are involved in a comprehensive sports coaching and games programme that is run here at school on a Friday afternoon. All children are encouraged to play for a local club who specialise in their respective sports and who have the infrastructure to cater of all students.

The selection of students for inter school sport is performance based. Sport is an extra curricular activity provided to our students by many enthusiastic teachers and parents and selection of teams is always difficult so we ask you to respect our decisions.

There is a cost for most sports. This is for transport only (except for basketball). We are getting a fantastic service from the sporting organisations who run these events which include coaching, organising draws and generally coordinating the entire event(s). Our school pays to join these organising bodies and the children do get a great opportunity. The transport cost is kept to a minimum. No pay unfortunately means no play. If you have difficulty paying please apply in writing to the Principal's 'Acorn fund’.

I have contacts with local clubs in our community so our students can further their sporting interest with Saturday sport. Information can be obtained from myself, Glen McKenzie (glen.mckenzie@stalbans.school.nz)

Canterbury
Primary School rules state "Age is at 1st January. Children must be 9 years or older to participate, OR in year 5 at school (ie participants must be in year 5 as the minimum age group)". This means any Year 5 eight year olds competing must race with the 9 year olds as this is who they will swimming against at the zones and Canterbury champs as there is effectively no 8 year old age group. The first two swimmers in the following events will comprise the swim team - freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly.  Please note Canterbury Primary School rules state that butterfly in an 'open' category. The team competes in the North East Zone championship and top “place getters”, 9yrs and over will compete in the Christchurch finals.
